Collection: Saint Emilion

In St-Émilion, practically everything is different from the top appellations of the Médoc with its premiers and the other classified châteaus. The vineyard area is smaller at just over 5,000 hectares and is spread over over 1,000 producers. However, it would be completely wrong to conclude that there is a lack of dynamism from this - the opposite is the case. It is precisely the lack of large, dominant companies - Château Figeac is the largest company in the appellation with around 40 hectares - that has enabled numerous up-and-coming small and tiny producers to establish themselves, who have quickly earned the reputation of "cult wineries" with tiny production quantities but excellent quality. The term "garage winemaker" has now become established for these estates, referring to the fact that the entire year's harvest often fits into a garage. These "garage wines" are not only very rare and expensive, but are also the subject of bitter disputes between important wine critics such as Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson.
