Collection: Saint-Julien
St. Julien is the smallest (only 3.5 km north-south) of the three top appellations of the Médoc and is in the shadow of its neighbors Pauillac and Margaux mainly because there is no Premier Cru here.
Nevertheless, the wines are also of outstanding quality and at least Léoville Las Cases is now at the level of a Premier Cru.
High quality and high consistency characterize this 900 hectare growing area. 80% of the area is classified and is divided into 11 châteaux, 5 of which are second growths. The area is dominated by the Léoville estate, once the largest in the Médoc, which is now divided into the three famous 2ème Crus estates Barton, Las Cases and Poyferré. The territory consists of gravel plateaus on the banks of the Gironde which are well drained and therefore ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wines from St. Julien are not quite as powerful and fruity as those from Pauillac, but they are elegant, softer and also very long-lasting.
