Collection: Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
A small part of today's Côtes may have produced wine in ancient times: they really began as a wine-growing region in the High Middle Ages under English rule, which lasted from 1154 to 1454. Almost a million hectolitres of Claret, as the English called the wine from their province, were shipped across the English Channel in the best years, which corresponds to around 120 million of our current bottles, exactly twice as much as the Côtes currently produce! Today, the Côtes are the best source of high-quality Bordeaux at reasonable prices.
Côtes means flank, slope. Four regions with slopes ideal for growing wine overlooking the waters of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers or their confluence, the Gironde, have joined together to form the Union of Côtes de Bordeaux: Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux on the right bank of the Gironde; Cadillac-Côtes de Bordeaux on the right bank of the Garonne between Bordeaux and Langon; Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux on the right bank of the Dordogne, around 50 kilometers east of Bordeaux between Saint-Émilion and the border of the department; and Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux between Saint-Émilion and Castillon.
